Red Sox Drop 2-1 Decision
|
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox, 2-1, in American League action at Milwaukee County Stadium 1976. Milwaukee pitcher Atlee Hammaker had a standout performance. The winning pitcher was Hammaker, now 9-4. He tossed 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 4. Andy Messersmith converted his 5th save in 5 tries.
Had Alfredo Griffin not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Griffin hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Brewers.
Hammaker told the Milwaukee Herald: "Sometimes the big stage is not big enough for me."
With the win, Milwaukee upped its record to 40-40.
