Cardinals Win at Chicago, 4-1
|
The St. Louis Cardinals got a stellar performance from pitcher Steve Carlton, who handcuffed the Chicago offense en route to a win, 4-1, at Wrigley Field 1979. Larry Andersen earned his 29th save in 37 chances. Chicago has now lost 4 consecutive games.
Pat Putnam, the 1981 NL home run champion , had a direct impact on the outcome. Putnam contributed a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put St. Louis up, 3-0.
"We'll savor this win," Carlton told the St. Louis Citizen, "then get ready for the next game."
