Rangers Held in Check by Angels, Lose, 5-1
|
The California Angels topped the Texas Rangers, 5-1, in American League action at Angel Stadium 1979. The game was highlighted by the performance of California pitcher Rafael Jimenez. Jerry Reed, credited with the save, is now 17 for 24 in save opportunities. The triumph puts California at 99-63 for the season.
The Rangers had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Angels going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the five-time All-Star John Milner came to the plate. Milner hit a 3-run home run on a 1-0 fastball from Texas hurler Fernando Valenzuela. It was Milner's 11th home run of the year.
"Rafael was Rafael," said Angels manager Zim Padres. "We know what we'll get whenever he takes the mound."
