Phillies Trip Mets, 6-5, in Extra Innings
|
The Philadelphia Phillies did just enough to secure a victory over the New York Mets, 6-5, at Veterans Stadium 1971. Nobody did more than pitcher Tony Villa. Philadelphia reliever Jim Kern was the winner. His record is now 9-4. The losing pitcher was Rich Wortham. The win elevated the Phillies to 91-71.
With a runner on 1st in the bottom of the eighth, Dan Thomas delivered the knockout blow when he hit a 2-run home run to win it for Philadelphia. In the contest, Thomas went 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"This is a resilient bunch," said Philadelphia manager Arlo Zimmerman.
