Giants Get Past Philadelphia for 5-4 Win
|
Philadelphia left fielder Tony Gwynn had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 5-4, to San Francisco at Candlestick Park 1993. Gwynn was 2 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. San Francisco reliever Dan O'Brien picked up the win, raising his record to 3-2. Tom Hume was tagged with the loss. Ross Davis was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 14 of 22 save opportunities.
Had Kevin Christensen not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Christensen hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Giants.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Christensen told a San Francisco Observer reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
The Giants raised their record to 40-51.
