Royals Upend Spiders, 5-1
|
The Kansas City Royals topped the Cleveland Spiders, 5-1, in American League action at Cleveland Stadium 1980. The standout performance belonged to Kansas City pitcher and Palo Alto, California, native Dan Petry. Petry went 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 3-3. Joaquin Andujar was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 2 of 4 save opportunities.
Kansas City used a clutch hit from Rick Manning to get the win. The shortstop drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Royals ahead, 4-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a doozy.
"I was able to get good plays made behind me," Petry said. "And I was able to make pitches when I needed to make pitches."
The Royals raised their record to 38-59.
