Cubs Deal Phillies 6-1 Defeat
|
The Chicago Cubs topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1, in National League action at Veterans Stadium 1971. The standout performance belonged to Chicago pitcher and The United States, native Bill Greif. The loss makes Philadelphia 53-48.
Chicago used a well-timed hit by Lonnie Smith to capture the win. The left fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Cubs ahead, 3-1. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Smith told the Chicago Observer. "It's as simple as that."
