| Home Loss Shrinks Mets' Series Lead to 2-1 | Facing elimination, the Cincinnati Reds were looking for a savior. For today, at least, Mickey Lolich delivered.
At Shea Stadium, the 32-year old pitched a game for the ages to fend off the New York Mets and help the Reds close their deficit in the League Championship Series. Lolich threw a 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the 3-0 Cincinnati win, striking out 6 and allowing 3 hits. The Reds how trail 1-2 in the best-of-5 series.
Lolich was in the zone all game. He frustrated New York hitters while giving the Reds 9 innings of quality work. Lolich threw 138 pitches, allowing 3 hits and getting 6 punchouts.
"We came in and got the job done. That's what it's all about in this business," said Lolich.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow in New York. The scheduled starters for the game are Sam McDowell for the Cincinnati Reds and Tom Seaver for the the New York Mets.
