Red Sox Squelch Orioles Offense in Shutout Win
|
The Boston Red Sox got a stellar effort from pitcher Dom Chiti, helping Boston score a win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles, 5-0. Chiti, now 6-4, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing no runs. The American League East Division-leading Red Sox have a record of 77-41.
The Red Sox grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Reggie Smith, who led the AL in home runs with 36 in 1976, hit a solo home run off Jim Clancy, putting Boston in front, 2-0. For Smith, it was his 7th home run of the season.
"It was a solid team effort," said Chiti after the game.
