Braves Take Down Mets, 3-1
|
New York got a terrific performance from pitcher Pete Redfern, but it wasn't enough to beat the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta won the Shea Stadium 1979 contest, 3-1. Redfern threw 7 innings of 2-hit ball for the losing team. The win was credited to Scott McGregor in relief. His record improves to 1-4. William Scholl took the loss. With the win, Atlanta raised its record to 64-64.
Atlanta used a clutch hit from Joe L Morgan to get the win. The second baseman drilled a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Braves ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a doozy.
During his postgame press conference, Braves manager Cary Rosen told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
