Athletics Suffer 7-5 Loss to Boston
|
The Boston Red Sox topped the Oakland Athletics by the score of 7-5, with the largest share of the credit going to first baseman Willie Aikens. Aikens went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times for the Red Sox. The winning pitcher was Dick Ruthven. He's now 8-9. He went 6.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits for the Red Sox. The Athletics, now 35-99, have lost 4 in a row.
The Red Sox grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third. With two out, Karl Pagel, who finished 3rd in the NL in home runs with 34 in 1978, hit a 3-run home run off Doug Bird, putting Boston in front, 6-0. For Pagel, it was his 4th home run of the season.
"I just tried to make good contact," said Aikens.
