Cardinals Win at San Francisco, 6-5
|
The San Francisco Giants got a superb performance from shortstop Dickie Thon. Still, it wasn't enough to beat St. Louis. The Cardinals won the game, 6-5. Thon went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Tom Candiotti got credit for the win, improving to 8-10. He allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in 6.2 innings. With the win, St. Louis pushed its record to 69-68.
The result might have been different, had it not been for Joe Torre, the St. Louis first baseman. Torre had a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 5-3. For the game, Torre had 1 double and 2 singles in 5 at-bats.
"You win some, you lose some. I don't get too caught up in all that," said Torre.
