Floundering Mets Lose 6th Straight
|
Steve Carlton never let the Mets get in a groove. The left-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Cardinals to a win, 4-1. Larry Andersen, now 9-7, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 2 and walking 0. New York is still trying to get off the schneid, having lost 6 in a row.
Craig Stimac drew 1 walk in his only trip to the plate for St. Louis. The 27-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring walk off Rick Jones. It was his 18th walk of the season.
Carlton called the win "a team effort."
