Phillies Trip Cardinals, 4-3, in Extra Innings
|
The Philadelphia Phillies did just enough to sneak past the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, at Veterans Stadium 1971. Philadelphia pitcher Jim Beattie, in particular, had a standout performance. The Cardinals, now 5-10, continue their slow start.
The Phillies procured the win, in large part because of third baseman Lou Whitaker. In the bottom of the 13th, he produced the game-winning run-scoring double.
"I give credit to my teammates for this win. We got it done," Whitaker told the Philadelphia Observer.
