Phillies Prevail, 8-6, Over Pittsburgh
|
The Philadelphia Phillies topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-6, in National League action at Veterans Stadium 1971. The game was highlighted by the performance of Philadelphia center fielder Candy Maldonado. Bill Singer, the winner, goes to 11-11. He allowed 6 runs on 10 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Tom Hume notched his 16th save in 29 chances.
The Phillies grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out, Ken Phelps hit a 2-run home run off Rafael Santana, putting Philadelphia in front, 6-0. For Phelps, it was his 18th home run of the season.
