Phillies Need Extra Innings to Top Cardinals, 4-3
|
Despite a great performance by St. Louis center fielder Pat Putnam, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Cardinals by the score of 4-3 at Veterans Stadium 1971. Putnam hit 2 home runs. Michael Morrison, now 1-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 0 and walking 0. The loss makes the Cardinals 5-11.
Philadelphia won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning. With no outs and Jeff Little on the mound for St. Louis, first baseman Dan Thomas hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Phillies fans to their feet.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said St. Louis skipper Nathan Hall, "and it cost us."
