Cardinals Win at Philadelphia, 9-5
|
St. Louis picked up a win at Veterans Stadium 1971, toppling the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-5. Pitcher Willie Hernandez was one of the reasons the Cardinals triumphed. Hernandez went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. His record improves to 1-2. The defeat makes Philadelphia 9-8.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Bob Watson? The St. Louis catcher had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to put the Cardinals on top, 5-4. For the game, Watson had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Hernandez.
