Astros Handed 2-1 Loss by Philadelphia
|
The Philadelphia Phillies had to overcome a fine effort from Houston pitcher Kevin Carr to grab a narrow 2-1 win at Veterans Stadium 1971. Carr went 8 innings and allowed 2 runs. The win elevated the Phillies to 20-17.
The Phillies got a big at-bat from first baseman Ken Phelps. For the game, Phelps went 1 for 2 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 5th home run of the season gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.
Phelps expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
