Mattingly Leads Mariners to 5-2 Win Over Red Sox
|
The Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-2, at Fenway Park 1976. The win was due in part to first baseman Don Mattingly, who went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Tommy John, who went 9 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 2 runs on 8 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 4. His record now stands at 7-0. With the win, Seattle upped its record to 24-18.
Mattingly had a timely hit for Seattle in the top of the sixth. With Boston trailing 2-1, he turned a 2-1 changeup into a 2-run home run. It was his 5th home run of the season, making it 3-2, Seattle.
"I'm glad we can make our fans happy with a win," Mattingly told the Seattle News.
