Reds Rebuff Phillies, 6-5
|
The Cincinnati Reds topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-5, in National League action at Riverfront Stadium 1970. The game was highlighted by the performance of Cincinnati third baseman Bill Melton. The winning pitcher was Doug Rau. His record is now 4-3. The left-hander went 8 innings, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits for the Reds. Jay Dillard earned the save for Cincinnati, his 7th of the year.
The Reds got a big at-bat from second baseman Jim Anderson. For the game, Anderson went 2 for 5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Cincinnati a 4-2 lead.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Philadelphia manager Arlo Zimmerman. "But we decided not to take it."
