Cardinals Prevail, 2-1, Over New York
|
St. Louis rode a fine outing from starter Tom Candiotti to victory over the New York Mets at Shea Stadium 1979. The final score was 2-1. Larry Andersen got credit for the save for St. Louis. It was his 12th of the year. The win elevated the Cardinals to 31-27.
Had Otis Nixon not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Nixon hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Cardinals.
Afterward, Cardinals manager Nathan Hall was ebullient. "That was a fun game to coach," he told a group of reporters, adding, "I hope it was just as fun to watch."
