Phillies Earn 4-3 Win Versus Pirates
|
The Philadelphia Phillies faced a tough opponent in Pittsburgh pitcher Rafael Santana, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Veterans Stadium 1971 by a final score of 4-3. Santana went 7.1 innings and allowed 3 runs. The win gives Philadelphia a season record of 32-28.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Philadelphia pinch hitter Ken Phelps, facing Robert Alexander, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Phillies the 4-3 win.
Phelps told a Philadelphia Observer reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
