Spiders Edge Tigers, 2-1
|
The Cleveland Spiders topped the Detroit Tigers, 2-1, in American League action at Cleveland Stadium 1980. The standout performance belonged to Cleveland pitcher and Meadville, Pennsylvania, native Richard Stumpp. Stumpp went 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. His record improves to 5-2. Joe Beckwith, credited with the save, is now 3 for 9 in save opportunities.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cleveland center fielder Jesse Barfield hit a two-strike curveball to left-center field for a run-scoring single. It put the Spiders up, 2-1.
"There are no moral victories," said losing manager Herman DeBarr.
The Spiders raised their record to 30-33.
