Fine Effort by Matthews Not Enough in 8-7 Reds Loss
|
Cincinnati got a terrific game from center fielder Gary Matthews. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Houston, 8-7. Matthews was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2. The win makes Houston 66-88.
Houston used the clutch hitting of Cecil Fielder to capture the win. The center fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Astros the lead, 8-7. For the game, Fielder had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.
"Nice to tuck this win away," said Fielder.
