Phillies Clip Cubs, 2-1
|
The Philadelphia Phillies did just enough to sneak past the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, at Veterans Stadium 1971. Philadelphia pitcher Jim Beattie, in particular, had a standout performance. Philadelphia pitcher Lawrence Burgess got the win, upping his record to 3-2. Shikato Ueda got the loss. The win gives Philadelphia a season record of 88-69.
Lou Whitaker was the walk-off hero for Philadelphia. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Phillies third baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring triple to send the teams home.
"This place was rockin'," Whitaker said.
