Cardinals Come Up Short at Chicago, 5-4
|
Fans watched the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals fight to the finish.
Chicago Cubs starter Bert Blyleven pitched a strong game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field 1979, leading the Cubs to victory, 5-4. Blyleven went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. His record improves to 4-5.
Bob Brenly, who signed a 3-year contract worth $190,000 on 12/24/1981, aided the Chicago cause with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the catcher drove in one run.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said St. Louis manager Nathan Hall. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
With the victory, the Cubs upped their record to 36-36.
