September's Best Rookie Named by NL Friday, October 1st, 1982 Kelly Downs is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 3-2 record and a 2.75 ERA in September. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the National League. The 21-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran. In 5 starts for the Pirates Downs has struck out 25 batters in 36 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .214 during his hot streak. In pitching stats this season Downs has rung up 6 wins and 12 losses in 27 games. He has an ERA of 4.47 and has fanned 122 batters in 169 innings. |
