Leal Smacks 5 Hits for Blue Jays
Friday, July 2nd, 1982
After a 5-hit effort to lead Dunedin's 19-7 victory over the Pompano Beach Stingrays, right fielder Manny Leal told BNN beat writers it had been "a special day."
"It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college, two hits in a game is nice," he said. "Three or four is better, but five or more is out of sight. And to do that at the Florida State League-level is really something special."
The 24-year-old player earned his accolades today at Pompano Beach Municipal Park with a spectacular 5-for-6 game against the Stingrays.
"His swing is getting there," said Blue Jays skipper , who spoke glowingly of Leal after the game. "We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Manny did that to perfection today."
Manny Leal singled in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 2nd, walked in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, singled in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th.
This season Leal is swinging the bat at a .233 rate with 14 hits in 60 at-bats. To date he has hit 1 home run, scored 11 runs and driven in 16.
