Hessler Records Shutout Against Capitals
Wednesday, August 18th, 1982
The Raleigh-Durham Capitals manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Salem Rebels. The Capitals were overpowered by Salem starter John Hessler, who hurled his club to victory, 2-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," said.
Over 9 innings, Hessler blanked Raleigh-Durham on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Hessler said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
To this point in the season, Hessler shows a 5-12 record, 23 starts, 145.1 innings, 119 strikeouts and a 5.33 ERA.
