Portsmouth HS Halts McClure's Hitting Steak Thursday, May 14th, 1970 Robby McClure came rolling into today's game against the Portsmouth HS Gryphons with a 31-game hitting string, but he left it on the field at Condors Ballpark. The 16-year-old Clearwater HS Surge catcher went 0-for-4 against the Gryphons as the Surge fell, 14-6. "I swung at a couple pitches I probably shouldn't have and I didn't swing at a couple I probably should have," he said, grimacing. "But that's what makes a hit streak so impressive in the first place -- it only takes a couple mistakes to end it all." On the season, McClure is batting .385 with 1 home run and 36 RBIs. He has played in 33 games. |
