Spokane HS's Spell Goes Ballistic with 5 Hits
Wednesday, May 13th, 1970
Spokane HS Jammers third baseman Ken Spell had a day to remember at Jammers Ballpark today, ripping apart the Fullerton HS Neptune and sparking the Jammers to a 9-7 victory.
Spell wrote his name in the record books with a 5-hit barrage, finishing his special day 5-for-5.
"I'm usually a first ball hitter," Spell told BNN reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid it."
Ken Spell singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Robert Bledsaw in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
In the current season, Spell has put up a .316 batting average with 48 hits, 2 home runs, 28 RBI and scored 27 runs.
