Red-Hot Fitzgerald Scorches Dust Devils
Thursday, April 2nd, 1970
Today at Ballpark of Cincinnati HS, Chris Fitzgerald put on an impressive display.
The Santa Clara HS War Eagles left fielder tagged Burbank (Los Angeles County) HS pitching for 5 hits in 7 at-bats, but his teammates were unable to capitalize on the spree and lost the game to the Burbank (Los Angeles County) HS Dust Devils by the score of 18-16.
"The loss takes some of the joy out of it, but I'll take it," Fitzgerald said. "5-for-7 ain't bad in any league."
Despite the terrific performance, the War Eagles manager was unwilling to offer his left fielder much praise, saying he holds his "whole roster" accountable for losses.
"Chris told me 'Coach, I had 5 hits' and I said 'Well that's great, but it looks like we needed one more from you,'" manager said.
Chris Fitzgerald singled in the 1st, doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th, grounded out in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
