Best Player Named by International League
Friday, October 1st, 1982
At the age of 20, Darryl Strawberry of the Syracuse Chiefs could very well have his best years ahead of him.
It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 1982 was good enough to win the right fielder the International League Most Valuable Player Award.
"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."
The top hitter put up a .254 batting average this year, as well as a .348 on-base percentage. He played 121 games and racked up 115 hits, 21 doubles, 5 triples, 25 home runs, 74 RBIs and 83 runs scored.
He received 9 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Howard Johnson of the Richmond Braves finished second in voting, while Jim G Wilson of the Syracuse Chiefs finished third.
