| Lier Collects Cycle Saturday, April 18th, 1970 Ryan Lier was jubilant as the Union City HS Astronauts left the field with a 19-13 win over the Lowell HS Fire today. He had every right to be.
The 15-year-old first baseman hit for the cycle at Golden Spikes Ballpark, had a 4-for-4 game and chalked up 8 runs batted in and 2 runs to boot.
"It's too bad I can't do that every day," Lier said with a smile to reporters after the game. "It would do wonders for my batting average."
Union City HS manager said he was "proud" of his first baseman's feat, but was not expecting it to happen.
"Cycles are tough because triples are tough," he said. "As soon as the ball left the bat on that triple, guys were jumping off the bench for him. Honestly, I wasn't sure he was going to be able to leg it out."
Ryan Lier hit an RBI double in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, hit a three-run triple in the 5th, hit a three-run home run off Alex Clark in the 6th and walked in the 8th.
In 17 games this year Lier has posted a .433 average and put up these numbers: 2 home runs, 20 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
